I posted !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! a few days ago but decided to stop being lame and actually call the town myself.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I got bounced around departments for a little bit (I don’t blame them, I doubt anyone has “dealing with kids who bought a 60-year-old car we owned for 8 years and he wants to know why” in their job description) until I eventually got a guy who is in charge of all the town’s vehicles. He wasn’t sure about the reasoning behind the Beetle’s initial purchase, but he was very interested in finding out, as well as interested in the car itself. I sent him an email with pictures of her as well as the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I wrote on it for Oppo back in October.

Hopefully this is the start of finding out why Andover bought it; I’m really excited to find out.

I need to do the same with the Cal forest service or possibly the Feds - since I’m not sure exactly which it was in Cali that special ordered a bunch of dark green Rancheros in ‘62.

Is yours still dark green?

Only parts are. It was repainted twice or thrice in other dark greens and primer, and I recently got most of it sandblasted, so the traces of the original dark green are few and far between. The truck was a special order with a low-ratio rear axle, tan vinyl interior (not a usual option, but something they had a code for), and a blank for the color on the data plate - IOW “some crazy bastard gave us a paint we don’t put on these normally, roll with it”.

I like it. You’d think a municipality would roll F100s though, ya know?

The lore is that it was Forest Service, which makes sense, but whether the Cal boys or the Feds I don’t know. There *are* a heck of a lot of Cali national parks, and it was ordered at Milpitas, which is closest to Muir and Yosemite, with Redwood and others also in-state not too far away. It’s probably somewhere that was in Ford’s service area for Milpitas, which narrows the field a bit. Unfortunately, I can’t get the original invoice/etc. from Ford on the truck, as it predates the purge that led to the Marti reports, and the Milpitas plant closed some time ago.

They have something similar to a Marti for the VWs but it’s not very detailed.

I at least have the grounded belief it was a big entity, most likely governmental. That makes the Forest Service the first place to check, and not, say, some random electrical company. It’s not just anybody whose pants clanged enough to walk into the Ford plant and say “make me some base models - with paint you don’t normally use, on all parts before and during assembly! Oh, and make the seats and cards out of the tan vinyl you offer in the Fairlanes just ‘cause.” Ford was accommodating to a lot of things, but that verges on crazy.
It was the cheapest pickup in the US, so they may not have been rolling in F100s because somebody’s budget was getting squeezed. It *was* made during the unibody F-series years, though, so maybe they didn’t see a big difference.

I have yet to sand the driver’s door - I may find something there in terms of a logo/etc. There was on the driver’s door for my Rover - the door (not the car) came from a Florida median mower.
